Description of Lords of the Realm
David Lester's masterpiece and definitely THE game that finally brought Impressions into the spotlight, Lords of The Realms is a great medieval strategy game that strikes a great balance between combat and empire building.
As veteran wargamers M. Evan Brooks observes, '...[the game] offers an interesting portrayal of thirteenth century politics and military maneuver. The '3-Cs' of medievalism are covered: castle construction, crop rotation, and combat. Think of it as a cross between Kingdoms of Germany and Castles II, but with more depth.'
What makes the game very addictive is, first and foremost, the fact that it finally broke away from the notorious 'spreadsheet-style' syndrome that most previous Impressions titles share. Although it still crunches a lot of numbers, and you will still keep track of many more statistics than you care to count, Lords of The Realms presents these statistics visually: you will see the graphical effects of all your orders (e.g. troops marching to their destinations), and seasonal changes (wheat stalks blow in the summer wind, and wilt with the onset of winter).
The AI is quite competent, and there are many nice historical tidbits in the game, including the simple but effective diplomacy model, to entertain both die-hard and casual gamers. Similar to Kou Shibusawa's Nobunaga's Ambition, Lester's Lords of The Realm is not only a labor of love, but a highly personal game where the designer's genuine interest in his country's heritage are fully borne by the game's excellence. It's unfortunate that Lords of The Realm II is not as addictive as this strategy game (although it is also an excellent game in its own right).
Highly recommended, especially to anyone who's interested in medieval history, and fans of Defender of The Crown who want more substance and accuracy in the game. Thumbs up!

How can i save a game?
The game optios too save the game are operative, but when you save the particular game, when you try to restore, the game dosen´t appear´s.

This is one of the greatest sand box games of the 90's. Although Lord of the Realms II was much more popular I did not care for it because it was scenario based and took much of the grand stratgey out of the game play.

This was the first game i purchased with my own money. It was worth it, providing many many hours of play time. It has a special place in my heart.
It is split into a turn-based strategic map and a tactical battle map. Managing territories is unique in that every peasant is assigned a task. So you must balance growing food, smithing weapons, building castles, or gathering resources with which to build castles and smith weapons. Furthermore, armies are recruited from the peasant population, which can severely limit your territory's production capacity or ability to raise another army. There are a few more strategic elements that are likewise very well implemented that are somewhat complex without being ponderous.
When two opposing armies meet, the game switches to the real time tactical map. There is very little true tactics needed here. Defense is basically corner camping, and offense is bum rushing the opposing army. The AI is terribly predictable.
There are only a handful of castles to build, which barely gives an advantage to the defender with the exception of the last castle, which has a moat that is incredibly effective. In fact, the other castle types are not even worth building.
Diplomacy is not really there, being that the game is pretty much a free for all. However, it is lots of fun to interact with the AI because each character is fully voice acted by talented and well directed actors. Getting the bishop to say 'you damned fool' was pretty much the goal of every game for me.
All in all, a wonderfully engaging game to play for its time. The graphics seem to have aged well and it would be worth trying out.

The game doesn't work... it's just a folder with two .siz folders that do nothing, even after unzipping the download. Waste of time/effort. Oh well... maybe some other site actually has a game file for this that works.

One of the most underrated strategy games of all time, Impressions' Lords of the Realm II is in my opinion the best game designed by David Lester, prolific designer and founder of Impressions.
This mediaval empire game improves on the already superb Lords of the Realm in numerous aspects, adding both complexity and replayability. Your objective in LOTRII remains the same as it was in the first game: The king in mediaval England is dead, and it's up to you to fight the other nobles for the throne and succeed him.
Again like the first game, you are put in charge of both the strategic level (i.e. making decisions for your entire kingdom), and tactical (i.e. taking control of troops in combat) - although you can have the computer handle the combat for you. At the strategic level, you view the action from the attractive isometric map, where you can move armies, adjust economic parameters, manage your resources, and engage in diplomacy with other noble houses.
As in the first game, your success in the game hinges on proper resource allocation and maximizing farm output. Each county in your empire has a fixed amount of arable land, which you can use for farming wheat or raising cattle to feed your peasants. Sufficiency in, or surplus of, food supply helps increase population, which in turn will increase taxes and the size of your army (recruited from peasants). Some peasants must also be assigned to gather other useful resources, build castles, and produce weapons of war. You can also hire mercenaries at the mercenary guild, but they are costly and not always co-operative.
When armies clash, the game switches to a tactical real-time battle mode, which looks similar to Mindcraft's Siege series, and is quite fun to play. Armies consist of peasants, archers, macemen, swordsman, crossbow troops, pikemen, and knights. Each type of troop has its own strengths and weaknesses, although an army of knights usually is practically invincible. What should prove more interesting to an armchair commander than simplistic open-field battles are the sieges, because you must decide how many siege engines, catapults, and battering rams to use, and where to position them.
The computer players are reasonably challenging - they are very easy to beat in the first turns of the game, but become worthy opponents in the later stages. Advanced options such as a hidden map, advanced farming and army foraging, and others make the game more complex, and help increase the replay value. In addition to the standard campaign play, LOTRII includes a nice custom scenario builder and a few multiplayer modes including DirectPlay support.
On the downside, there is no variety in terms of victory conditions -you simply must conquer every county to win. This rigid condition, coupled with the level of micromanagement required for each county in the later stages, makes the game tiresome toward the end (especially when you are clearly going to win, but must first tolerate the tedious process of crushing the last counties of the last enemy). Also, more castle types would have been nice (although you get those in the Siege Pack add-on).
All in all, LOTRII will please fans of the first game, as well as anyone who likes turn-based/real-time gameplay based in the medieval period. The game is not very original, but it is still a lot of fun and surprisingly replayable. Highly recommended to anyone who likes strategy games.
